Wild and Scatter: how the two main special slot symbols differ

Almost every slot has two special symbols — Wild and Scatter. They are often confused, even though they work differently: one helps complete a payline, the other pays on its own and unlocks bonuses. Let’s break it down using real engine rules as an example.

Wild — substitutes any symbol

The Wild symbol substitutes for regular symbols to complete a winning combination on a payline. If one symbol is missing for a payout on a line, the Wild in the required position "turns into" it.

Wild usually does not replace scatter — otherwise bonuses would trigger too often and break the math. In our engine, Wild is marked with the symbol W and only works on active lines.

Scatter — pays and triggers the bonus

Scatter (symbol S) is not tied to paylines: it pays based on the number of symbols anywhere on the screen. Three scatters award a payout and trigger free spins, regardless of which reels they land on.

That’s why the scatter is the “key” to the bonus game: 3 symbols unlock 12 free spins, 4 and 5 unlock more. The more scatters, the longer the bonus.

Why these are not the same

Wild increases the chance of closing a line here and now, but does not trigger the bonus on its own. Scatter does not help on lines, but gives a direct payout and entry into free spins. A good spin is when both symbols work together.

Understanding the difference helps you read the paytable: Wild and Scatter are always listed separately from regular symbols, with a note about their special role.

FAQ

Wild replaces scatter?
